MAQUOKETA, Iowa — A Georgia man says he will donate a large building in the Timber City Industrial Park to Jackson County.
Supervisors said N.L. Bassford suggested giving a 53,100-square-foot building to the county. In exchange, Bassford will get a tax deduction for the donation of the building appraised at $1.28 million.
County Attorney Phil Tabor said he has been in contact with the owner and provided documents for the board to sign to put the process in place. When Bassford gets the IRS documents from the county, he will send the deed to the property.
The building housed S&H Fabricating from 1990 to November 1999, when the company closed. Since then, the building has been rented a few times as a warehouse, Stacy Driscoll, chamber director, said.
Supervisor Steve Flynn said Bassford, of Valdosta, Ga., called the county “out of the blue” earlier this year about making the donation. Bassford has not said why he wants to give it to the county and was not immediately available for comment.
“This will open up some options for us,” supervisor chairman Larry “Buck” Koos said. “The board will have to have a brainstorming session to see what we’ll do with the property.”
Informally, supervisors talked about making the new property into county offices, or selling the property and using the proceeds toward renovations of the Andrew Jackson Care Facility for a new jail.
