Iowa’s first NCAA wrestling champion since 2004 pleaded guilty to a charge of public intoxication after his arrest early Tuesday morning in Iowa City.

Mark Perry, who won the 165-pound championship at the NCAA meet last month and was named on April 14 as the Hawkeyes’ most valuable wrestler, was arrested by Iowa City Police at 12:56 a.m. Tuesday after they responded to a call about an individual standing in the middle of an east Iowa City intersection yelling profanities, a police report stated.

Perry’s blood-alcohol content was recorded at .200, according to the police report. The legal limit to be considered intoxicated in Iowa is .08.

The report also indicated that Perry was “singing and rambling” in the back of the squad car as he was taken to the station. He entered his plea later Tuesday in Johnson County District Court.

Perry, a three-time all-American from Stillwater, Okla., finished 28-4 this season and defeated two-time defending NCAA champion Johny Hendricks in the national finals.

He is the second Hawkeyes wrestler to face alcohol-related charges since the conclusion of the 2006-07 season.

Alex Tsirtsis, an NCAA meet qualifier, was charged with public intoxication by Iowa City Police on March 21.
