SPRINGFIELD — When lawmakers left Springfield for their two-week spring break, high electric bills were a focus of attention.

But when the Senate returned to action Wednesday, the issue wasn’t at the top of the list.

Senators left town abruptly in early April, declining to vote on a plan to roll back electric rates for customers of Ameren and ComEd to 2006 levels.

State Sen. Gary Forby, a Benton Democrat sponsoring the rollback, said Wednesday morning that he didn’t hear from Senate leadership or utility officials during the two-week break.

When asked Wednesday if the legislation could come up for debate this week, Senate President Emil Jones, D-Chicago, said: “Ask Forby, it’s his bill.”

Forby said he’ll call the measure for a vote if he’s given the chance.

In the meantime, a House panel tweaked a plan that would allow voters to pick members of the Illinois Commerce Commission. The commission has come under fire in recent months from lawmakers who blamed the group for circumstances that led to higher power bills.
