Clinton Humane Society official reports harassing calls

CLINTON, Iowa — Clinton Humane Society administrator Natalie Ehm reported to Clinton police this week that she received harassing phone calls at the shelter office.

Ehm said the calls are related to an ongoing dispute between the organization’s board of directors and a group of members who want them removed from office.

She said she received calls at the shelter on Friday and an anonymous call at her home on Saturday morning, which was answered by her daughter. Ehm said the caller was rude, but not obscene.

“I never dreamed anything like this would happen,” Ehm said.

Capt. Michael Gertson of the Clinton Police Department said Ehm was given a packet that contained forms on which to log the date, time and other information about any future calls. No charges have been filed.

Ehm said she has not received any other harassing calls since she made the report Monday.

Board president Kelly Thomsen said after the Ehm received the calls, she spoke to the Clinton Police Department about whether it would be a good idea to have uniformed officers present at Monday’s board meeting. Two officers were sent to the meeting, which was closed to the public after the board announced the names of three candidates for four open positions on the board.

Thomsen said only three people applied for the four positions. They are Jeff Miller, Kimberly Casey and Jody Locey.

“Who would want to get into this mess, right?” she said.

The board election will be held May 2, as will a referendum initiated by the Save Our Shelter group to remove all the current board members from office.

SOS member Tammy Olsen said she was disappointed she did not get a chance to raise some concerns to the board at Monday’s meeting before the audience was asked to leave.
