Just because Dave Shropshire has left KCQQ-FM 106.5, it doesn’t mean you won’t be hearing his voice any less frequently.

Shropshire, a 12-year veteran of the afternoon and night shifts at “Q-106.5” left the station last week to concentrate on his burgeoning career doing voiceovers, commercials and narration.

“I think it was inevitable,” said Shropshire, 53. “It got to the point where the voiceover business was bringing in so much. I spend six hours doing that, then go to the radio station and spend seven hours there. That’s a long day.”

A 35-year veteran of radio, Shropshire said staying at home during the afternoon and evening hours will give him more time with his family, including the younger of his two sons, who has autism.

“I was taking a look at my kids and going, ‘You know, there’s only a certain amount of time I have left to be with them,’” he said.

Shropshire has a home studio in the basement of his Davenport home, where he e-mails voice files around the world.

In the Quad-Cities, he’s heard on several commercials, and has been the voice of KLJB-TV, growling “Fox 18” for the past 15 years.

He’s the voice of Center Point Energy in Houston, and is featured on projects for NASA and Sony. He’s also on numerous regional commercials, including auto dealers in Des Moines and Omaha.

The Eden, N.C., native said he left on good terms. He was the last personality left from when “Q-106.5” signed on 12 years ago, in a lineup that included recently departed morning show hosts Greg Dwyer and Bill Michaels.

“It was real bittersweet,” he said of leaving the Clear Channel/Quad-City Radio Group classic rock station. “I left a lot of great people over there.”
