A Silvis, Ill., man was allegedly using a vacant Moline home to grow 75 marijuana plants before police received an anonymous tip and discovered the “large-scale operation.”

James E. Rasmussen, 32, of 320 1st Ave., is charged in Rock Island County Circuit Court with a felony count of possession of marijuana plants. He was not in custody as of Friday, but a warrant was out for his arrest.

According to an affidavit filed in court, Moline police received an anonymous tip that marijuana plants were being grown at 153 7th Ave., Moline, on March 5. After doing some investigating, officers obtained a search warrant and seized the plants.

Police found a “large-mother plant” approximately three to four feet tall that had grown over a six- to eight-week period. The plant had been cloned by cutting off pieces that were replanted, the affidavit states.

About 75 plants had been harvested for about four weeks in what the affidavit described as a “large-scale operation.” The plants were hydroponically grown, a process that doesn’t use soil, with an irrigation system and a system of lights.

The house was vacant and was being used only for growing the plants, the affidavit states. The windows and doors to the basement were covered with a black material.

During the investigation, officers learned that Rasmussen had the utilities for the home under his name starting on Sept. 28, 2006, and the home was using more water than the average residence, the affidavit reports.
