SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois House voted unanimously in support of legislation today that will give Rock Island County voters the opportunity to approve raising the tax for the Niabi Zoo from 1 cent per $100 of equalized assessed valuation to 6 cents.

The legislation, which is sponsored by state Rep. Patrick Verschoore, D-Milan, now heads to the Senate. If approved by the General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Rod Blagojevich the Rock Island County Board would decide how much to raise the tax.

“It’s a great zoo,” said Verschoore.

“This is truly a regional zoo. It attracts people from miles and miles away. It is a real asset,” said state Rep. Don Moffitt, R-Gilson.
