TODAY: (Updated 2:26 p.m.) An alleged drunk driver launched his car into an East Moline home early Wednesday morning leaving a large hole in the wall and sending an infant to the hospital where the baby was treated and released.

East Moline police Lt. John Reynolds said the vehicle driven by Jeremy Luis Padilla, 27, of Moline, struck the infant’s room about 2 a.m. at 1518 Morton Drive, but the child apparently was not in the room at the time.

Padilla was charged Wednesday afternoon with a felony count of aggravated driving under the influence. He remained in custody at the Rock Island County Jail on $50,000 bond and is due back in court March 6.

According to court records, Padilla was convicted in 2000 in Rock Island County for a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence.

Reynolds said the parents took the child to Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis, Ill., as a precaution. He said a language barrier between the police and parents, who speak Spanish, initially prevented officers from getting more information about possible injuries.

Padilla and a passenger were also treated for injuries at the hospital and released. Padilla was then taken to the Rock Island County Jail.

The accident left a 15-foot by 6-foot hole in the side of the house, the lieutenant said. Officials did get a blood sample from Padilla, but Reynolds said he didn’t know what the driver’s blood-alcohol level was.
