Benefit to help children of murder victim

“Healing Waters: I will Carry My Sister’s Pain,” a performance by domestic violence survivors which highlights their stories, will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Martin Luther King Community Center, 630 Martin Luther King Drive, Rock Island.

The show, performed by Shellie Moore Guy, Dorian Byrd, Joy Johnson-Williams, Juanita Span, Sandra Solomon and Briana Byrd, will cost $5 and will benefit the two children of LaShaune Wright. Wright was killed Jan. 1 in Rock Island. Her ex-boyfriend, Steven Hill, is charged with four counts of first-degree murder in her death.

Several area pastors have declared Sunday as “Safe Sunday” and will speak about domestic violence from the pulpit.

Braley to host opening of Davenport office

U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, will host a grand opening for his Davenport office on Friday.

The open house will be from noon to 2 p.m. The office is at 209 W. 4th St., Davenport.

Walkers can use gym

at AlWood High School

WOODHULL, Ill. — Area walkers may use the big gym at the AlWood High School for walking.

The time available is from 11:02 a.m. to 12:17 p.m.

Lyndon man hospitalized after car accident

LYNDON, Ill. — A Lyndon man remained hospitalized Tuesday after he fell asleep while driving and crashed his vehicle into a tree.

The accident occurred at 2:37 p.m. Monday on Moline Road about 1 mile east of Lyndon, according to the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department. Thomas E. Whitney, 56, was driving westbound when he fell asleep at the wheel, went off the roadway and struck a tree.

Whitney had to be extricated from his vehicle. He was taken by helicopter to OSF St Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where he was in serious condition Tuesday.
