U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, has been appointed to the House Small Business Committee and will chair one of its subcommittees, his office said.

Braley was chosen to head the panel’s Subcommittee on Contracting and Technology, which oversees governmentwide procurement practices affecting small business, as well as technology issues at the Small Business Administration.

The full committee oversees the SBA.

“It’s a very important committee because of the technology implications,” Braley said on a conference call with Iowa reporters this week.

Braley said, as chair of the sub-panel, he is interested in exploring how technology can be used in rural areas to promote small business and economic growth, as well as help with government procurement programs.

He added he hopes to have field hearings in the district.

The subcommittee also deals with some energy issues relating to small business.

This is the first time since at least 1959 that a freshman congressman from Iowa has been picked to chair a committee or subcommittee, Braley’s office said, citing the Congressional Research Service.

This also is Braley’s third committee. Usually, a congressman sits on two, but his office got a waiver.

Braley is already on the House Transportation and Infrastructure and Oversight and Government Reform committees.
