CLINTON, Iowa — This weekend’s B-rrry Scurry in Clinton and Wendy’s Chili Golf Open in Davenport may be more b-rrry and chilly than usual, but that won’t stop hundreds of bundled-up runners and golfers.
The 26th annual race, sponsored by Clinton Community College, begins at noon Saturday at the college and winds 4 miles through downtown Clinton, along the banks of the Mississippi River and back. The high temperature Saturday is expected to be about 5 degrees, with the wind chill factor making it feel more like 10 or 15 degrees below zero, according to the National Weather Service.
“We have never cancelled the race,” board member Lorrie Hickey said Wednesday.
Hickey, who has been involved with all but one B-rrry Scurry race, said she remembers only one race that was colder than Saturday’s race is expected to be. About 400 people already have registered for the race, including 10 to 20 on Wednesday, and more are expected to register at race time, she said.
“Sometimes runners are a little crazy,” she said.
The race registration packets include information about how to dress to run in cold weather.
Steve Kilburg, co-owner of Running Wild in Davenport and a past participant in the B-rrry Scurry, said it is important for runners to dress in layers, making sure that the material they wear next to their skin will move moisture away. Runners also should wear extra socks, but keep in mind they will be running and generating heat.
“Once you get going and once you get moving, it’s really not that bad,” he said.
Golfers will face the same conditions at the 18th consecutive Wendy’s Chili Golf Open, where golfers will play one of two modified nine-hole layouts at Davenport’s Credit Island Golf Course. Tee-off times range from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with more than 350 golfers expected.
This event began as a putting tournament on the frozen lagoon and evolved into a nine-hole winter golf outing. It takes place each year regardless of weather conditions, and local Wendy’s Restaurants provide hot chili to warm the golfers.
Kilburg doubts the cold temperatures will keep many participants away from the B-rrry Scurry, or the Chili Open for that matter.
“The name obviously implies it’s going to be cold,” he said.

Cold snap settles in
The cold weather is expected to stick around.
“We’re looking to stay pretty cold for at least seven days, possibly more,” Mike Zenner of the National Weather Service in Davenport said.
The forecast calls for scattered snow flurries through the weekend, with a high near 14 on Friday and in the single digits for the rest of the weekend. Lows are expected to be between zero and 8 degrees below zero.
