Freezing temperatures combined with light winds are creating very cold conditions this morning in the Quad-Cities.
At 10 a.m., the temperature was hovering at 3 degrees. With a south wind at 5 mph, the wind chill was 6 below. Winds are expected to be between 10 and 13 mph today with gusts up to 18 mph, creating wind chills dipping below zero.
Unfortunately, temperatures are going to get colder -- dangerously colder -- before they get warmer. The National Weather Service already is considering a wind chill advisory for Friday night and Saturday morning, and again Sunday.
Temperatures could reach a high in the mid-20s today, and light snow is expected to spread over the area late this afternoon and into this evening. It should taper to flurries around midnight. At most, a few tenths of an inch may accumulate.
Temperatures, however, could cause freeze-up ice jams on area rivers for the next several days, particularly on the Rock River in Illinois. Forecasters say minor rises up to near flood stage could occur, but rapid rises aren’t expected.
The weather service expects the coldest air of the season to move into the area late this week and stay around through the weekend. An arctic air mass will move in on Friday and bring with it strong northwest winds. It’s expected to create wind chills ranging from the single digits below zero to the teens below zero.
Low temperatures are expected to be zero on Friday, 4 below on Saturday and 5 below on Sunday. High temperatures are forecast from 14 degrees Friday to 7 above zero Sunday.
