Two Iowa Quad-City salons are facing fines after state inspections revealed deficiencies, officials announced Monday.
L.A. Nails at NorthPark Mall in Davenport was charged with having unsanitary conditions and allowing unlicensed workers to perform cosmetology services. The salon was owned by My Le Duong at the time of the inspection, but it has since changed ownership, officials said.
Kristi’s Hair Design in Bettendorf was charged with unsanitary conditions. It is owned by Kristi York.
The salons are two of five statewide disciplined in a second round of actions handed down by the Iowa Board of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences Examiners from the inspection of 550 salons statewide. Three Quad-City area salons were fined late last year.
Representatives from the two salons could not be reached for comment Monday.
At L.A. Nails, inspectors found last summer no red hazardous waste container was available and that a nail chamois buffer which could not be sanitized was present, officials said. When the inspector entered, two workers left the salon and were presumed to be unlicensed.
At Kristi’s Hair Design, an inspector found used nail buffers and a chamois buffer without a red hazardous container for disposal, officials said. The inspector also determined that the whirlpool foot spas were not properly cleaned and disinfected at the end of each day.
L.A. Nails was fined $1,000. Kristi’s Hair Design was fined $200.
The Department of Public Health had an extra $20,000 available last summer to hire extra part-time inspectors for nail salons, officials said when the first round of citations were issued in December. The inspectors visited 550 salons out of an estimated 4,800 in Iowa.
