IOWA CITY — This time, the hole was too deep for Iowa to recover.

Coach Lisa Bluder’s Hawkeyes spotted Minnesota with a 22-point lead before staging a furious rally to force overtime Thursday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

But Minnesota gathered its composure to record an 80-78 victory.

In the Hawkeyes’ Big Ten opener, Iowa rallied from a 17-point deficit to defeat the Golden Gophers 60-58 in Minneapolis on Dec. 28.

Minnesota's Brittany McCoy sank a pair of free throws with 11:28 to play to give the Gophers a 60-38 margin Thursday. Led by Kristi Smith's three 3s, a pair of jumpers and three free throws — 16 points total — the Hawkeyes outscored the Gophers 34-12 to send the game into overtime.

Smith led Iowa with 24 points, including four 3s.
