TODAY: (Updated: 12:04 p.m.) SPRINGFIELD — President Bush will bring his message about the global economy to Peoria Tuesday, prefacing a major economy speech on Wednesday in New York.

He'll tour the Caterpillar Inc. world headquarters and speak to employees there, White House spokesman Alex Conant said this morning.

Conant said Bush will use the giant land-mover manufacturer as a backdrop because the company is a good example of a successful effort to create local jobs while competing in the global marketplace.

Bush's State of the Union address this week caught the attention of some auto manufacturers when he called for an increase in fuel economy standards for cars and trucks.

Initial plans have Bush making just one stop in Illinois on Tuesday.
