(Jeff Cook/QUAD-CITY TIMES) This semitrailer traveling from Illinois to Iowa, crossing the Interstate 280 bridge, lost control Thursday afternoon and slid into the ditch, rolling over as it went down the embankment. A Davenport firefighter walks to the rig, surveying the damage.

(John Schultz/QUAD-CITY TIMES) A firefighter looks over a wrecked semitrailer in a ditch near Interstate 280 at the Rockingham Road exit in Davenport on Thursday.

Davenport police continue to investigate why the driver of a semitrailer lost control of the rig, which turned 180 degrees and rolled over into the ditch Thursday afternoon along Interstate 280 at the Rockingham Road exit in Davenport. The accident happened at about 4:50 p.m.

Police said the driver was northbound on I-280 and appeared to have taken the Rockingham Road exit after crossing the bridge from Rock Island. Somehow, the truck went out of control, took out a light pole, and rolled over.

The odd thing, police said, was that the rig rotated 180 degrees to where the tractor was facing southward. Police said the trailer was filled with fabric softener. A crew from Fred’s Towing, Davenport, secured the vehicle for the night. Police said the trailer would be unloaded by hand today, and then a crew from Fred’s would raise the vehicle from the ditch. The driver was taken to Genesis Medical Center-East Rusholme Street, Davenport, for observation, but he suffered no serious injuries, police said.
