Fake money circulating in Q-C

Five people arrested in Burlington, Iowa, for passing fake $50 bills have been connected to similar incidents in Davenport nearly two weeks ago.

Arrested in Burlington on Monday were Tiffany D. Roberts, 21, of Chicago, and Dominque Christe Pitts, 20, of Chicago, both charged with interference with official acts and forgery; Chyenane Mitch Simpson, 27, of Chicago, charged with forgery and possession of a controlled substance; Darrell Donnell Johnson, 28, of Chicago, and Anthony Lovell Curry, 29, of Burlington, both charged with forgery.

Davenport police received four reports of fake $50 bills being passed at two convenience stores and two stores in the Village Shopping Center between Jan. 12 and 15. The bills shared the same serial numbers as the ones passed in Burlington.

“We think they are the same people,” Davenport police detective Mike Martin said.

In the four Davenport incidents, a person bought something for $4 to $5, paying for it with the fake $50 bill, Martin said.

The $50s were printed on $5 bills to make them undetectable to counterfeit detection pens, but other security features were still distinguishable, according to Burlington police.

Two people were arrested during a traffic stop after a teller matched the description of the accused counterfeiters from a police alert, police said. They led police to the three others at a Burlington motel where police executed a search warrant and recovered thousands of dollars in counterfeit $50 bills and counterfeiting supplies.
