Bettendorf Scout achieves Eagle rank

Tyler Dryg, a senior at Bettendorf High School, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He is a member of Troop 89, Bettendorf.

For his project, he reconstructed fireplaces at Devils Glen Park, Bettendorf. The project took 483 volunteer hours. Bill Martin, a local mason, volunteered at least 70 hours of his time and assistance on the project.

Dryg began scouting in kindergarten as a Tiger Cub in Pack 81 at Mark Twain Elementary School. He  attended numerous scouting trips, including the National Jamboree in 2005 and Boundary Waters in 2004. He is a member of Order of the Arrow, an honor service association within scouting.

Drug education award named for local student

A new statewide award has been named after a Black Hawk College student in recognition of his contribution to the Illinois Drug Education Alliance Youth and Alumni Boards.

The Patrick Olson Award of Inspiration will be awarded annually to a member of the Illinois Drug Education Alliance Youth Board who exemplifies his spirit, determination and leadership.

Since he was 5 years old, Olson has dealt with vision impairment caused by a recurring brain tumor. Removing and treating the tumor caused complete blindness in his left eye and significant tunnel vision in his right eye. He must use a cane to maneuver the halls of Black Hawk College.

Olson became involved with the Illinois Drug Education Alliance Youth and Alumni Boards six years ago during his junior year at Sherrard High School. He is pursuing an associate degree at Black Hawk  and serves as secretary of the Quad-Cities Campus Student Government Association.
