An Ohio man killed in a crash last week on Interstate 80 that also killed three greyhounds died of massive head trauma rather than a heart attack, according to the autopsy done Saturday.
After the accident Thursday, friends and family said Francis Evans, 62, of Rayland, Ohio, might have had a heart attack, but that was ruled out by the autopsy, according to Davenport police.
Police say Evans was prescribed medications that could cause drowsiness. The accident occurred about 4:30 a.m. near the Division Street overpass of the interstate. Two teens, Evans’ grandson and a family friend, escaped serious injury in the crash.
Evans was driving a pickup eastbound pulling a specially made trailer for hauling racing greyhounds. Traveling from Oklahoma, the 30 dogs in the trailer were destined for a dog track near Kenosha, Wis.
The truck went off the road, and the trailer broke free and flipped at least once, allowing seven greyhounds to escape, according to police.
Meanwhile, a West Virginia state senator has been identified as the owner of 30 greyhounds involved in the accident. Sen. Mike Green, D-Raleigh, said the dogs, valued at about $5,000 each, are being held at farm near Dubuque, Iowa.
Green said the dogs were being taken to Wisconsin to compete in their first races.
