Friends of the Mill

Location: Muscatine Agricultural extension office, 1514 Isett Ave., Muscatine, Iowa

Event: The Friends of Pine Creek Grist Mill will meet. The group of volunteers was formed in 1996 to renovate the mill, located at Wildcat Den State Park in Muscatine County.

Library celebrating 1st birthday

Date: Jan. 13

Time: 2 p.m.

Location: Davenport Public Library-Fairmount Street, 3000 N. Fairmount St.

Event: The Fairmount Street branch will celebrate its first birthday Jan. 14. To celebrate, the library will serve birthday cake and refreshments Jan. 13. Craft centers will be set up so patrons can create birthday cards for the library.

Meet the four princesses

Date: Jan. 13

Time: 10 a.m.

Location: Davenport Public Library-Fairmount Street, 3000 N. Fairmount St., Davenport, Iowa

Event: Meet the four princesses of Scott County: Emily Slavens, Miss Scott County; Katy Paulsen, Teen Miss Scott County; Rebecca Knapper, Junior Miss Scott County; and Hailey Saunders, Little Miss Scott County. During their visit, the princesses will read stories, and teach ballet and ribbon baton techniques. Each participant will receive an autographed picture.

Miss Muscatine program

Location: Muscatine Performing Arts Center, Muscatine, Iowa

Event: The 42nd annual Miss Muscatine Scholarship Program will include 15 young women competing for the titles of Miss Muscatine and Muscatine’s Outstanding Teen. Admission is $8 and free for children 3 and younger.

Skate-A-Thon

Location: Quad-City Sports Center, 700 W. River Drive, Davenport

Event: Fourth annual Skate-A-Thon. There will be music, food, raffle items, and a silent auction.

Trivia night

Location: Rogalski Center, St. Ambrose University, Ripley and Lombard streets, Davenport

Figge seeks docents, volunteers

Location: Figge Art Museum, 225 W. 2nd St., Davenport

Event: The Figge Art Museum is conducting an information and training session for prospective student volunteers. The museum has volunteer opportunities available in the areas of education programs, family activity center, visitor services and studio classes.

Monthly breakfast

Date: Jan. 14

Time: 7 a.m. — noon

Location: Lost Nation Legion Hall, Lost Nation, Iowa

Event: The Lost Nation Legion is having its monthly breakfast, consisting of eggs to order, pancakes, French toast, sausage, hash browns, biscuits and sausage gravy, toast, coffee, milk and orange juice. The cost is $6 for adults, $4 for children younger than 12, and preschoolers are free with a paid adult.

Children’s program

Date: Jan. 15

Time: 1 p.m.

Location: Moline Public Library

Event: Hear poems, essays and personal recollections about diversity written by members of the Boys and Girls Club of Moline. After the readings, there will be a discussion on diversity and its relevance in today’s world. The young authors will celebrate the publication of “Making One Good World: Kids Write About Diversity” by signing copies of the book.

Historical society luncheon

Date: Jan. 15

Time: 11:30 a.m.

Location: Deere-Wiman Carriage House, 817 11th Ave., Moline

Event: Janet Moline will present “Reflections on the Bald Eagle” at the Rock Island County Historical Society Friends luncheon program. Cost is $5.50.

Martin Luther King Jr. celebration

Date: Jan. 15

Time: 10:30 a.m.

Location: United Neighbors, 808 N. Harrison St., Davenport

Event: United Neighbors is conducting its annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. Guest speakers are Dr. Tom Coley, president, Scott Community College, Bettendorf; and Mark Newsome, president and chief executive officer of Interactive Technologies Group Inc.

Fundraiser for candidate

Date: Jan. 16

Time: 5-7 p.m.

Location: Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 25, 4600 Blackhawk Road, Rock Island

Event: Illinois Rep. Pat Verschoore, D-Rock Island, and Sen. Mike Jacobs, D-East Moline, will host a chili supper fundraiser for Cheri Bustos, a candidate for 4th Ward Alderman in East Moline. The cost is $10 per person. The Democratic primary election will be held Feb. 27.

Information meeting for parents

Date: Jan. 16

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: Davenport West High School

Event: Davenport Community Schools information/course selection meeting for parents of incoming ninth-graders for the 2007-08 school year. The meeting will include basic information on the high school experience, an update on the registration process, the chance to meet building staff, and a discussion about course requirements and class options.
