DONNELLSON, Iowa (AP) — Court dates have been set for three teenagers accused of plotting a deadly attack at their high school.
Jacob Schulte, 15, Stephen Copeland, 16, and Dalton Bird, 17, were charged last month with conspiracy to plan a forcible felony at Central Lee High School.
Copeland and Bird are scheduled to appear at a preliminary court hearing on Jan. 18. Schulte will appear Feb. 1 at the South Lee County Courthouse.
According to authorities, the teens had access to several handguns, rifles and shotguns and were planning to attack on Dec. 20. The plan was thwarted when Copeland had second thoughts and alerted authorities.
A search of Bird’s home yielded several notes written in secret code. By using the key created by the teens, authorities decoded messages that indicated three people were to be killed at the school.
Authorities declined to release the names of those targeted or a motive for the attack.
