MAQUOKETA, Iowa — Jackson County voters overwhelmingly approved to extend the 1-cent sales tax until 2022.
The current sales tax expires in 2012, but voters on Tuesday approved another 10 years. A simple majority was needed to pass. It passed with a 76.9 approval rating.
Total voters Tuesday in the 16 precincts in the county were 1,468, which is a 10.06 percent turnout. Of the total, 1,129 voted yes and 319 voted no.
Maquoketa School Superintendent Kim Huckstadt said he was very pleased with the results. “This means the majority of people think this (sales tax) is the best way to fund projects,” he said.
Maquoketa plans to build a $6 million gym and remodel the cafeteria at the high school. In order to do the project, the district will have to borrow against the revenues from the upcoming sales tax.
Huckstadt said they hope to get bids next month with construction starting this spring.
Other districts in the county have said they have used their sales tax revenues for projects such as buying buses, adding classrooms, putting on new roofs, buying energy-efficient equipment and upgrading buildings.
