TODAY: (Updated 12:10 p.m.) Bettendorf’s Zach Gabelmann will make the first start of his college football career on Saturday when he replaces injured Mike Klinkenborg in the lineup for Iowa at the Alamo Bowl.
The fifth-year senior will open at middle linebacker for the Hawkeyes against defending national champion Texas, coach Kirk Ferentz said Friday morning.
Klinkenborg, who leads Iowa in tackles, is sidelined with a foot injury he suffered in practice approximately 21/2 weeks ago..
“He’s tried to go a couple of days this week, but it just isn’t ready,’’ Ferentz said. “We have confidence in Zach. He’s been getting nearly all of the snaps there the past two weeks and has been handling things well.’’
COMING UP: Gabelmann will reflect on his career in a story which will appear in Saturday’s Quad-City Times.
