DES MOINES (AP) — The Board of Regents has approved a 5.2 percent tuition increase for in-state students at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa.

Regents approved the tuition hike unanimously at their meeting in Iowa City. There was no discussion about the increase.

During a November meeting in Ames, the board discussed an increase proposal, and heard from student leaders at the three universities who told them that the increase was acceptable because it’s in the range of expected higher education inflation costs.

The 5.2 percent increase for 2007-08 is for resident undergraduate students.

Undergraduate resident students will pay $358 more in tuition and fees at the UI, $301 more at ISU and $278 more at UNI. It raises resident tuition and fees to $6,273 at the UI, $6,161 at ISU and $6,190 at UNI.

Red Cross donations accumulate for victims

CLINTON, Iowa — The American Red Cross received a couple more large donations Tuesday from  businesses to aid the families displaced by last week’s fire at Deer Ridge Apartments.

Dave Frett, director of the Gateway Area Chapter, said the agency is assisting nearly 90 people who  were left without a place to live and lost their possessions. The agency has been helping with accommodations and other immediate needs.

Ipsco Tubular, Camanche, presented a $5,000 check and Wal-Mart provided a check for $10,000, including donations from the Clinton Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club in Davenport.

Donations have now reached nearly $42,000, with donations made in amounts from $1 to $5,000 that came from an individual in Davenport.

The Salvation Army and Benevolent Society also have been providing assistance.

Maquoketa utility looks to the future

MAQUOKETA, Iowa — Municipal Electric Utility board members have started negotiating with Wisconsin Public Power to become city’s the wholesale distributor.

Currently, the city has a contract with RPGI, which ends in December 2008.

“We have the option of staying with them,” Doug Owen, MMEU manager, said. “But the board is considering switching. We would be with 42 other communities with our own generation ability. We think this would be better for us.”

MMEU has a power plant and distribution center, which would allow it to provide power to the city every day. But Owen said it would cost residents much more for MMEU to run its engines than purchase the power wholesale. But the city gets a break because it does have the capability of providing power when needed.

Owen said the electric rates aren’t scheduled to increase for two years. A rate study is expected to be completed in 2008.

“But the rates are going to have to go up no matter who we go with. The power demands are growing more and more,” Owen said. “No one has built enough transmission lines. No one wants them in their backyards.”

In the meantime, MMEU is planning to spend $150,000 to replace fuel tanks at the power plant. Owen said they are currently too small and the utility can buy in bulk at cheaper prices.
