Following are suggestions from Kathy Passarette, founder of Creative Home Expressions, a Long Island-based interior decorating firm.

Just like when you decorate your home, choose an inspiration to get you started. This could be holiday gift-wrap, a favorite holiday decoration, ribbons or your home’s existing color scheme.

Repeat your theme, colors and textures throughout your home. For example, if you decide on a red and gold color scheme, use red and gold towels in your kitchen; a red and gold pillow or pillows in your living room; red and gold dinnerware or linens in your dining room. Just make sure that the colors you choose work with your existing décor.

Decide on style. Keep the style, whether traditional, casual, country, etc., the same throughout your home. For instance, if your home is decorated with a country style you might consider rustic twig hurricanes, grapevine wreaths and decorations using natural elements.

Keep it simple. A glass vase or jar filled with colored ornaments or balls; plain greenery in a basket; a candle placed in the center of a wreath as a centerpiece; or a pillar candle placed on a raised cake plate, surrounded by scrap greenery. These simple things can portray the holiday spirit without taking up a lot of space in your home.

Accessorize with odd numbers. Three pillar candles; five snowmen, and use different heights and levels to show off your decorations, whether on a mantle, centerpiece or tabletop.

Choose a theme, whether Santa’s, snowmen or angels. You can use this theme to advantage by placing your collections in groups throughout your home.
