These individuals from Davenport Community Schools were recognized by the Iowa High School Press Association at an awards ceremony Oct. 11:

Hall of Fame

Deb Buttleman Malcom, newspaper adviser at Davenport Central High School and Iowa High School Press Association vice president for special projects. She also has served as the yearbook adviser and is program director of the Summer Journalism Academy for elementary and junior high school students. She has received the Iowa High School Press Association Vahl Teacher of the Year Award and the Stratton Award in Iowa and was named a national Dow Jones Distinguished Adviser. This year she is a Journalism Medal of Merit recipient.

Steven Lyle, newspaper adviser at Davenport West High School. He has the distinction of teaching students who have earned Quill and Scroll’s top award, the Gallup Award, for their newspaper every year of his 20-year tenure. He has served as Iowa High School Press Association president and on the board of directors. He also received the Vahl Teacher of the Year and Stratton awards.

Journalism Administrator of the Year

Tim Wernentin, principal at Central High School. He began supporting journalism education as a student on high school journalism educator Rod Vahl’s staff at Central High School. He has been a solid supporter of the journalism program at Central High School, to the point where he wore a newspaper hat on Newspaper Hat Day and will accompany the journalism students to Nashville in November for the Journalism Education Association Convention.
