DES MOINES (AP) — The state’s first big winter storm buried parts of northern Iowa in up to 9 inches of snow Friday, delaying or closing schools.

And in eastern Iowa, severe thunderstorms produced nickel-sized hail.

In Emmetsburg, more than 7 inches of snow had fallen by late morning, but people were taking it in stride, said Connie Boone, manager of the local Casey’s General Store.

“I love it, it’s beautiful,” Boone said.

She said the heavy snow hadn’t slowed business at her store.

Schools in the area were canceled and people were standing around her store, getting warm over a cup of coffee.

“They are coming in and standing around because they don’t want to go back out on the roads,” Boone said.

She said passing snowplows were finally beginning to clear the road in front of her store by late morning.

“They got the flags up for Veterans Day, so we’re good to go,” Boone said.

Craig Cogil, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Johnston, said a narrow band of heavy snow was expected to begin dissipating by early afternoon.

Curlew, just south of Emmetsburg, was reporting about 9 inches, Cogil said.

Lighter amounts of snow were expected in central Iowa, with an inch or two possible along the U.S 30 corridor, he said. Lighter amounts also were forecast for northeast Iowa.

He said dime-and-nickel-sized hail fell near Grinnell and Reasoner.
