East Moline police are seeking the public’s help in solving a home invasion that occurred early Wednesday.

About 2 a.m., a man kicked in the door of an apartment at the Blackhawk Hills Apartment complex, 5100 Kennedy Drive.

Once inside, the man threatened an elderly woman with a handgun, tied her up with a phone cord and assaulted her. The man then ransacked the apartment before fleeing.

Police said the person they are looking for is a black male, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing about 170 pounds. He was wearing a navy blue hooded sweatshirt and baggie denim jeans.

Anyone with information about the break-in is asked to contact the East Moline Police Department at (309) 752-1550 or Crime Stoppers at (309) 762-9500.

Forum will receive work force ideas

A public forum will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Moline Public Library, 3130 41st St., so members of the community can give their ideas on challenges and opportunities in the area of work force development.

The ideas for Rock Island County communities will be compiled into a grant-making plan to use the proceeds of two endowment plans totaling more than $1 million. The Moline Foundation is leading the initiative along with the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend. The two foundations are cooperating in a new program called Communityworks, which will provide funding for land use, child care and work force development.

Initial Communityworks funding came in the form of operating grants from the Grand Victoria Foundation, Chicago. Through funding from community leaders and a gift of $400,000 from the William Butterworth Memorial Trust, more than $1 million has been raised.

Man gets 50 years for second-degree murder

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A California man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing his wife’s former roommate with a hammer in Council Bluffs.

Pedro Bonito, 36, was convicted of second-degree murder in September in Pottawattamie County. He was initially charged with first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping in the death of Miguel Rosales, whose body was found Feb. 4.

Prosecutors accused Bonito of abducting Rosales and striking him in the head with a hammer at least eight times.

At his sentencing Monday, Bonito apologized through an interpreter but said he was only defending himself.

Bonito’s wife had lived with Rosales about three months before moving to California with Bonito and the couple’s children. Bonito claimed Rosales threatened to kill him when he returned to Iowa to sell his mobile home.
