Iowa’s next General Assembly will need to make some smart moves on education. Teacher Cindy Winckler needs to be there to help.

Winckler deserves a fourth term to help manage state funding that lifts teacher salaries fairly and assures the money leads to better academic results, not just happy teachers. We believe that’s best done with those who know Iowa’s respected public education system, not those who want to dismantle it. Winckler was among the few candidates who spoke innovatively about helping young people launch careers here, with business mentoring programs that wouldn’t have to cost a lot. “Solutions don’t always require us to pass a law,” Winckler said. Amen.

Republican challenger Susie Bell wants to trade in her seat in the front row of the Davenport City Council chambers for a seat in the legislature. Bell is a Quad-City treasure, whose persistent nudging and fond memories of Davenport offer a gentle reminder of civility in those council chambers. We’re not ready to give that up.

Cindy Winckler deserves re-election.
