DeWITT, Iowa — A deer caused a three-vehicle accident in which seven people were injured, Clinton County sheriff’s investigators said.
The accident occurred at 7:01 p.m. Friday in both the southbound and northbound lanes of U.S. 61 about two miles north of DeWitt.
Sheriff’s investigators said that a southbound 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Derek Robert Combs, 23, of Dubuque, struck a deer. His vehicle went out of control and slid across the median into the northbound lanes.
Combs’ vehicle then was struck on the driver’s side by a 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Thomas William Atkinson, 25, of Madrid, Iowa. His wife, Tara Atkinson, 26, also was in the pickup.
A 2001 Oldsmobile Alero, driven by Susan Gail McKamey, 51, of Welton, struck the left rear of Atkinson’s pickup truck.
Combs’ Tahoe flipped onto the driver’s side. Atkinson’s pickup came to rest facing east in the northbound lanes. McKamey’s Oldsmobile entered the east ditch, where it came to rest.
Combs was taken to Genesis Medical Center-East Rusholme Street, Davenport, by Med Force Air Ambulance.
He was listed in serious condition Saturday night, a Genesis spokesman said.
Both Thomas and Tara Atkinson were taken to Genesis Medical Center-DeWitt, with minor injuries, authorities said.
McKamey and her passengers, Brooke Bloom, 1, Blake Bloom, 3 and Skylar Bloom, 6 were taken to Genesis Medical Center-DeWitt, by a private vehicle with minor injuries.
