Staff report | Friday, October 20, 2006 |
Rockridge and Rock Island both need victories tonight to have a chance at making the Illinois High School Association playoffs.
But it remains to be seen how good a chance they'll have. Both teams are 4-4 entering the final game of the regular season and in most years, five wins almost guarantees a team of making the playoffs. But it appears there may be quite a few 5-4 teams that miss the playoffs this season.
Entering the final weekend, 162 teams in Illinois already have clinched playoff berths by winning six or more games. There are 77 teams with five wins and 57 with four. Of those 134 teams, only 94 will make the playoffs.
That means that not only are Rockridge and Rock Island sitting on the fence, but Fulton, Sterling Newman, West Carroll and Alexis United (all 5-3) need wins tonight to be certain of playing next week. Fulton and Sterling Newman play each other in Fulton.
