More than 40 volunteers from Aledo are heading to the state capitol this week for a celebration. The Mercer County town has won two Governor’s Hometown Awards for the Aledo Sesquicentennial Celebration and Aledo Central Park Bandshell project.
The awards will be presented today in Springfield.
The Aledo Sesquicentennial was celebrated during September of last year, and the Aledo Central Park Bandshell, a $250,000 project, opened last spring. A majority of the bandshell was funded through community donations.
This year marks the 25th year for the Governor’s Hometown Awards.
Volunteer judges reviewed and ranked applications based on local need, volunteer participation, project continuity and results.
The Sesquicentennial won in the General category with the bandshell winning in the Parks & Recreation category competing against other towns with populations between 1,901 and 5,000.
