The Illowa Bi-State Combined Federal Campaign has begun with a Workplace Olympics at the Rock Island Arsenal.

In 2005, the Illowa campaign collected a record $588,145, with half of those donations going to nonprofit agencies in the Quad-Cities. This year’s goal has been set at $600,000.

Teams of employees from organizations based at the Arsenal and other federal agencies in the region competed in events such as a super ball relay and a balloon-popping contest.

A team from the headquarters of the U.S. Army Sustainment Command took first place in the event, held Oct. 4. The team members were Amanda Dahl, James Brunsvold, Kate Westfall, Julie Kammer and Ryan Pierce.

Second place went to a team from Edgewood Chemical and Biological Center’s site in Rock Island . Members of the team included Larry Light, Marsha Davenport, Mark Dorr, Lisa Dowdy, Tom Green and Greg White. A management team from the Arsenal’s Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center made up of Mike Downes, Mary Ford, Claire Johansen, Toby Brown and Ed Flinn took third place.

More than 40 local nonprofit agencies that benefit from the campaign’s donations set up displays at the fitness center during the Olympics. The campaign will continue through Nov. 17 for federal and postal employees from a 12-county area in western Illinois and eastern Iowa to make donations to local, national and international nonprofit agencies.
