Masons announce Iowa state officers

Dennis Zahrt, Bettendorf, was elected to serve as Grand Master by the Iowa Masons at their 162nd annual meeting Sept. 15 in Davenport. He will serve as state leader for a year, and introduced his theme, “Get Hooked on Iowa Masonry.” He is a member of Brubaker Masonic Lodge 675 of Davenport.

Robert Holliday, Davenport, was elected Junior Grand Warden for Iowa. Realff Ottesen, Hampton, Ill., was appointed Grand Chaplain; Dennis Soebbing, Davenport, was appointed Senior Grand Steward; and David Melchert, Donahue, was appointed Junior Grand Deacon.

Quad-City Cruisers donate to charities

The Quad-Cities Cruisers celebrated their 25th season by donating $5,000 to five local charities. The money was raised during the 2006 car show/cruise-in season.

These five charities received $1,000 each:

Black Hawk Area Education District, Special Olympics, Scott County Disabled American Veterans, Juan Martinez (a man fighting cancer), and Children’s Miracle Network.

Bellevue student leads volunteer effort

Mary Kilburg, daughter of Dwain and Barbara Kilburg, Bellevue, Iowa, is a volunteer team leader for Project America Day 2006 at Mount Mercy College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The project features small groups assisting those in need, doing chores such as fall yard work and maintenance for elderly residents.

In From the Cold announces grants

In From the Cold, a local organization that provides funds to the homeless, announced 2006 grant recipients. More than $12,000 was awarded to nine area agencies serving homeless persons or those in danger of becoming homeless.

The 2006 grant recipients were: Churches United of the Quad-City Area, Community Health Care, Christian Care, DeLaCerda House, Family Resources, John Lewis Community Services, The Salvation Army, Supplemental Emergency Assistance Program, and Vera French Community Mental Health Center.

The annual Mayors’ Hunger Luncheon has grown to become the organization’s major fundraising event.

Grand Detour Festival announces art awards

Vahan Bedeian, Blue Grass, Iowa, won the Jewelry Award in the professional artists division of the 58th Grand Detour Arts Festival at John Deere Historic Site, Grand Detour, Ill.

Angela Barnhart, a fourth-grader at Sterling Christian School, received a third-place award in the children’s art division. Sarah Giroux, a 10th-grader at Sterling High School, received a second-place award in the high school division.
