Jeff Cook/QUAD-CITY TIMES Pleasant Valley High School student Christie Bain will soon host the Fall into Fashion Charity Fashion Show. That event, which will help the Hand-in-Hand organization, will be held Oct. 14 at Savitri’s in Davenport.

What Christie Bain did over her summer vacation changed her outlook on life.

The Bettendorf teenager spent several weeks volunteering at Hand-in-Hand, a nonprofit organization that serves special-needs children and young adults and their families. She was paired with a young boy, whom she helped with everyday tasks and special activities.

“It made me realize life is a lot easier for me,” she said. “I don’t take it for granted as much.”

Molly Steil, director of the respite program at Hand-in-Hand, said she was impressed with the heart for service Bain possesses.

“She was just so caring,” Steil said. “She committed the time and always had a positive outlook on the day.”

As a student at Pleasant Valley High School, Bain is required to complete 40 hours of community service before graduating. But her experience at Hand-in-Hand prompted her to do more for the group.

Having modeled and acted throughout her youth, the 16-year-old decided to host a fashion show, with proceeds benefiting the organization.

The show will be held Oct. 14 on the second-floor ballroom of Savitri’s, a restaurant in downtown Davenport. Audience members can attend a pre-event dinner or simply come for the fashion show, Bain said. Money from either type of ticket will go to the charity.

At Savitri’s, a 40-foot catwalk will extend down the room, with tables and stadium-style seating surrounding it. Up to eight volunteer models will show off outfits loaned by Maurices, a clothing store with locations in Davenport and Moline.

Bain garnered sponsors — including Event Management Unlimited, Max Models and Talent Agency, Ultimate Fitness, Hale Printing & Vinyl Graphics, Savitri’s, Impact Signs, B100 and Maurices — and visited Quad-City businesses to raise funds, gathering more than $750. All money left after paying off the show’s expenses will go to Hand-in-Hand, Bain said.

The high school junior’s biggest worry in putting on the show is that enough people won’t show up, leaving her with little money to give to the organization. However, if the event is a success, she may host additional fashion shows in coming years.

“I might do it next year, if there’s a good turnout,” she said.

Steil said Hand-in-Hand will use any money raised on improvements identified in the organization’s wish list.

Among them are buying books and materials for the nonprofit’s literacy programs, adding a sand and water table, and improving privacy areas, she said.

But regardless of how much money they receive, Steil said everyone involved in Hand-in-Hand is touched at Bain’s efforts.

“I was just amazed that someone as young as Christie had the vision and the ability to do this,” she said.

The experience of organizing the show has made Bain consider a career in fashion event planning. However, she will likely keep her plans of going into architecture. Bain intends to graduate early from Pleasant Valley and take classes at Scott Community College before finishing a degree at the University of Iowa. She would like to earn a master’s degree in architecture at the University of California at Berkeley.

Bain hopes Quad-Citians support her fashion show, so she is able to make a significant contribution to Hand-in-Hand. But she will consider the project a personal accomplishment, she said.

“Probably a lot of people think a 16-year-old couldn’t do this,” she said.
