Bettendorf

Change to be collected for Hearn at game

Volunteers will be collecting change at tonight’s football game between Clinton and Bettendorf high schools to donate to Travis Hearn, a Rock Island High School football player who was seriously injured Sept. 22 in a game against Alleman High School, Rock Island.

Fans are encouraged to clean out nooks and crannies in their homes and cars to find spare change to donate.

Moline

Pet wellness clinic will be Saturday

The Rock Island County Animal Care and Control and Petco will offer a pet wellness clinic at Petco, 4411 16th St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Microchipping and rabies vaccines will be available for $10 each. Rabies vaccinations will be available from 1-3 p.m.

Distemper and parvo vaccinations will be available. Pets also may be registered at the event.

Rock Island

City provides free leaf collection service

The City of Rock Island will provide free leaf collection for its residential refuse customers from Oct. 23-Dec. 8.

Customers must place their leaves in approved paper yard waste bags at the normal refuse location on the regular collection day. The bags may not contain anything other than leaves.

Residents do not have to be participants in the yard waste subscription service to use the leaf collection service and they do not have to place a yard waste sticker on the bags.

The city also will supply free bags beginning Oct. 21. The bags can be picked up at Rock Island City Hall, 1528 3rd Ave., and Public Works Department, 1309 Mill St. The city has purchased 60,000 bags for the program. Residents will be given a maximum of 10 bags per day and must provide proof of Rock Island residence with a photo identification.

Bettendorf

Iranian immigrant tells of her journey

Farideh Bazdar, owner of Treasurer Under Feet Oriental Carpets in Moline, will tell the story of her journey from Iran to the United States during a free program at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Bettendorf Library.

Bazdar, with her husband and young son escaped from Iran to Germany in 1998. They were able to immigrate to the United States in 2001. She will tell about life in Iran, the struggles they faced leaving the country and how they finally got to the United States.

The program is sponsored by the World Community Institute and the World Affairs Council.

Rock Island

Friendship Manor holds open house Sunday

Friendship Manor’s Fall Open House will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at 1209 21st Ave., Rock Island.

They will conduct tours and serving refreshments prepared by their executive chef.

Friendship Manor is the only Illinois Quad-City continuing care retirement community, offering independent and assisted-living apartment homes, plus skilled nursing, rehabilitation and respite care.
