Iowa State has another night game next Saturday when it plays host to conference rival Nebraska at 7 p.m.
Record crowd
Even with the much-hyped Iowa-Ohio State game on television, Iowa State and Northern Iowa attracted a record crowd Saturday. The game drew a paid attendance of 55,518, the largest crowd in the 31-year history of Jack Trice Stadium and the largest in Iowa State history.
The previous high was 54,475 for a 1990 game with Nebraska.
Butter-fingered Baum
ISU coach Dan McCarney couldn’t believe it. With Saturday’s game against Northern Iowa hanging in the balance, ultra-reliable senior return man Ryan Baum mishandled not one but two punts.
Baum set up one of ISU’s second-half touchdowns with a 25-yard punt return and scored the other one on a
65-yard runback to tie the score at 21.
But then the senior from nearby Gilbert, Iowa, couldn’t even seem to catch the ball later in the fourth quarter. He muffed one punt with UNI recovering only to have the play wiped out by an illegal procedure penalty. On the rekick, the ball caromed off Baum’s facemask with UNI’s Grant Zielinski pouncing on it at the 34-yard line.
The Panthers took the lead with a field goal a few minutes later.
Baum said he was simply trying to run before he had the ball.
“In his entire career here, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Ryan Baum drop two punts in practice,” McCarney said. “He just doesn’t do that.”
Senior Austin Flynn also fumbled in the fourth quarter to hamper the Cyclones’ comeback.
“We don’t have two better kids in this program in terms of how hard they work and how much they care about their teammates than Austin Flynn and Ryan Baum,” McCarney said. “I wouldn’t trade them for any two senior players in the country.”
Going with his gut
McCarney defended his decision to go for it on fourth-and-2 at the UNI 10-yard line with his team trailing 21-7 late in the first half.
“You have to go with your gut there,” he said. “I felt that with four of our five players upfront being seniors that we ought to be able to get a yard-and-a-half there.”
Stevie Hicks was halted a full yard short of the first down marker.
Close games galore
Iowa State fans are getting their money’s worth in home game this season. All of them have been nailbiters so far – a 45-43 triple-overtime conquest of Toledo, a 16-10 escape against UNLV and Saturday’s one-point squeaker.
“As long as the Ws keep showing up on the board, I don’t care how it happens,” Baum said. “I don’t care if it’s 48-0 or 25-24, as long as we win.”
