Hannah Schrader’s championship at No. 1 singles gave Rock Island Alleman just the margin it needed to edge the host school for the team title Saturday at the Rock Island Gold Invitational tennis tournament.

Schrader, a sophomore, defeated Peoria Notre Dame’s Alyssa Lawler 6-2, 6-4 in the final.

“I’d say this is pretty big because I was pretty nervous,” Schrader admitted. “The whole last game I was really nervous, but I told myself I could do it.”

Schrader’s title lifted the Pioneers to a 30-29 advantage over Rock Island in the eight-team tournament. A champion earned eight points, a runner-up seven and so on in the event that featured two flights of singles and three flights of doubles.

Sterling Newman claimed third place with 26 points, edging Peoria Notre Dame and Princeton by one point when Allie Pietryga and Katie Kipping rallied for a

2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Teryn Skowronski and Bridget Lawless of Notre Dame in a 2 ½-hour battle at No. 1 doubles.

“We just had to work together and get it back,” Kipping, a sophomore, said of the pair’s comeback after dropping the first set.

“We wanted to keep lobbing and let them make the mistakes,” Pietryga said.

Newman broke serve to pull even at three games each. Pietryga followed by serving four aces in a row for a 4-3 advantage. Each team held serve in the next four games before Newman broke again in the 12th game to finish it.
