LA PORTE CITY, Iowa (AP) — Runoff from a 140-head cattle feedlot contaminated a wildlife area east of La Porte City, but did not reach a nearby creek, officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources said Thursday.

The DNR found that manure runoff from the feedlot reached the Black Hawk County Cedar Island Wildlife Area earlier this week. The manure pooled in a low-lying area but did not reach Rock Creek, officials said.

The owner of the feedlot, Mike Lawrinenko removed the manure and is working with county conservation staff to reseed and restore the affected area, officials said.

He also has hired an engineering firm to design a concrete storage structure that will contain all manure from the feedlot.

The DNR was considering appropriate legal action and planned to issue a notice of violation, the agency said in a news release.
