MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) — A 15-year-old boy has been charged with torturing his family’s cat, officials with the Henry County sheriff’s office said.

Michael James Carpenter, of Salem, broke the cat’s rear leg and then sprayed a foam substance over the cat’s body, Sheriff Allen Wittmer said.

The cat had to be euthanized, the sheriff said.

Carpenter was charged with animal abuse.

The case has been referred to juvenile authorities and he remained free pending a court hearing.
