(UPDATE: 10:18 p.m.) SPRINGFIELD — John Gianulis of Rock Island, a top aide in Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s personnel office, is leaving his post amid a federal probe into the administration’s hiring practices.

But Gianulis, deputy director of intergovernmental relations and personnel, said his Sept. 30 departure from the $83,208-per-year job has nothing to do with the ongoing investigation.

“It was a personal decision,” Gianulis said Friday. “It’s time to move on.”

Gianulis, who turns 84 next month, said the commute between Springfield and Rock Island had become tiring. He plans to focus his efforts now on helping elect Phil Hare as the next congressman in Illinois’ 17th district.

Gianulis has been one of Illinois’ leading Democratic operatives for decades.

He has been chairman of the Rock Island Democratic Party since 1968 and has headed an organization of county Democratic leaders for years. He plans to continue in those positions.

Gianulis played a key role in helping elect Blagojevich in 2002, making the governor the first Democratic chief executive in a quarter century.

Gianulis’ backing came despite tepid support of Blagojevich by other party leaders.
