The father of a 2-month-old boy who died late Monday has been arrested and charged with murdering the infant, Rock Island County Sheriff’s Lt. Gerry Bustos said.

Thomas Jones, 21, is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery to a child. He was being held Tuesday in the Rock Island County Jail on $2 million bond.

Sheriff’s investigators responded to a call for a baby not breathing at lot 117 at the Airview Mobile Home Park on Indian Bluff Road in Milan at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Bustos said.

“We started our investigation at that point,” he said.

The child was taken to           Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island, and then airlifted to a Peoria hospital, Bustos said.

The child died late Monday shortly before midnight, he said, adding that he was not yet releasing the victim’s name.

The child lived with both parents, Bustos said. “He (Jones) is the natural father,” he added.

The type and extent of the child’s injuries were not disclosed.

First-degree murder of a victim under age 12 carries a mandatory life sentence under Illinois law.

Aggravated battery to a child is a Class X felony that carries a prison sentence of six to 30 years.

Jones was sentenced May 9 to one year on conditional discharge and ordered to pay $1,832 in restitution, fines and court costs after he was found guilty of three counts of theft under $300, a Class A misdemeanor under Illinois law.
