An undetermined amount of diesel fuel from a Davenport trucking company entered Black Hawk Creek and the Mississippi River, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, or DNR, said Tuesday.
City of Davenport staff discovered diesel fuel seeping Tuesday into a storm sewer that drains into Black Hawk Creek. The city employees traced the fuel to a parking lot at Wenger Truck Lines, where they found heavy staining around the diesel fueling station. The city also observed a small sheen and diesel odor nearby in the Mississippi River.
Wenger officials reported to the city Tuesday that there had been a loss of diesel fuel Monday, but the exact amount was unknown.
The city placed absorbent booms and pads in Black Hawk Creek to prevent the fuel from spreading. If Wenger officials had reported the spill when it happened, the DNR said, the city and the state agency could have taken steps to reduce the impact.
The DNR will send a notice of violation to Wenger for failing to notify the agency of the spill within six hours of the occurrence. The DNR will continue to investigate and may consider additional legal action.
