Q: Our beagle has severe allergies and recently developed a yeast infection on her skin. What is the most effective shampoo to use for this problem?
A: Several human and pet shampoos are available that are active against yeast. Ketoconazole can be purchased in both prescription and over-the-counter preparations now and is probably the most effective agent to fight yeast.
Miconazole shampoos are also beneficial and usually cost less than ketoconazole. Several formulations of miconazole combined with chlorhexidinean effective topical antibioticare also available. Since bacterial infections are often present with yeast infections, this can be an important benefit.
People anti-dandruff shampoos have been recommended for some pets but in general, side effects limit their usefulness as the pH of pet’s skin is different from people.
Your veterinarian will have other recommendations regarding frequency of shampooing, contact time of the shampoo with the skin and in some cases will prescribe oral medications to assist in getting rid of the yeast and perhaps secondary bacterial infections.
