The illness of its lead singer has forced the country band Sugarland to cancel performances, including Saturday night’s grandstand date at the Mississippi Valley Fair, Davenport.

Fair general manager Bob Fox said he was informed Thursday afternoon that Jennifer Nettles is canceling concerts and recording sessions because of strep throat.

The band has sold more than 2 million copies of its debut album, “Twice the Speed of Light,” and was expected to be one of the big grandstand draws at the fair.

In its place, Sawyer Brown has been scheduled for the 8 p.m. Saturday slot.

The band known for hits including “Step That Step,” “The Race Is On” and “Used to Blue,” previously performed at the fair in 1990, 2000 and 2003.

“We’re glad the Quad-Cities loves Sawyer Brown,” Fox said. “We’re happy we were able to get them at this late date.”

The fair continues through Sunday in Davenport.
