A new building at Davenport’s Fejervary Zoo that would bring order to its entrance, add handicapped-accessible restrooms and create a year-round education center for children was presented Monday to the City Council.
Bids have been let and are expected to be returned this week for a structure that would include about 3,000 square feet of space at the entrance to the west-side zoo, said Dan Sherman, the city parks and recreation director.
Alderman Ray Ambrose, 4th Ward, praised the project, saying the building would turn what is now a seasonal park into a year-round venue. Last year, groups of children totaling about 8,000 came to the zoo, but there was no place for all of them to be inside at once, Sherman said.
“The base bid is for a building on a slab at grade, but we’ve also asked for prices on a basement and a deck at the back of the building overlooking the zoo to see how expensive they would be,” Sherman said.
A building on a slab is expected to cost about $400,000, he said. So far, funding for the project is expected to come from the city’s capital improvement budget, a grant from the Riverboat Development Authority and donations collected from a fundraising campaign.
The building would be located at the entrance to the zoo and require demolition of an existing concessions area and removal of a number of fences and gates that have been built over the years, according to the plans shown Monday night at a Committee of the Whole meeting. In addition to the restrooms, the building would include the education center and a new concessions area.
Aldermen will be asked Wednesday night to vote for a resolution approving plans and a contract for construction of the building.
