The Big Island Soil and Water Preservation Association will host a “Levee Appreciation Day” today at the Rock Island Conservation Club, located on Big Island Road in Rock Island, to celebrate the protection the levee offers Big Island and Milan, Ill.

The festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. with a live auction to raise money for the new Illinois Department of Natural Resources building to protect the Hennepin Canal Parkway equipment and the search and rescue boats.

There also will be minnow races, games for families, a scavenger hunt, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will demonstrate lock and dam models, a silent auction and a taco dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
