CLINTON, Iowa — A second Clinton teenager faces charges in a scheme to rob a Clinton convenience store.

Marquis Luckett, 17, of 741½ 9th Ave. S., was arrested this week on first-degree robbery and third-degree theft charges in the June 16 incident at the Hop-N-Shop at 716 S. 4th St. Justin Mitchell, 19, of 518 1th Ave. S., Clinton, was arrested last week on identical charges.

Luckett is the young man who was baby-sitting and was burned on his arms while trying to rescue six children from an apartment fire in January at the Brentwood Bluff apartment complex in Clinton. One of the children, 3-month-old Corrtrail Lewis, died in the fire.

According to court documents, the pair allegedly worked together in the robbery. Luckett, who turned 17 last week, made a preliminary court appearance Tuesday and is being held in Clinton County Jail on $32,500 bond.

Clinton County Attorney Mike Wolf explained that the first-degree robbery charge was filed in adult court because it is a forcible felony, while the theft charge against Luckett was filed in juvenile court. He said the prosecution will seek to have the theft charge moved to adult court.

The court affidavits state that Luckett and Mitchell entered the Hop-N-Shop convenience store at 11:30 p.m. June 15 and told the clerk they were coming back to rob the store. At 12:30 a.m. June 16, the pair entered the store with a BB handgun and took money from the register. Luckett also is accused of pointing the gun at a customer who came in the store, and demanded his cell phone and told him to leave.

Wolf said the theft charge involves taking money from the register. The robbery charge involved pointing the gun at the customer.

The case remains under investigation, but Wolf said no charges are anticipated to be filed against the clerk who knew about the impending robbery.
