An ancient therapy that can positively affect the mind, body, and spirit will be reintroduced to health-care professionals in the Quad-Cities this weekend.
Genesis Cancer Center and Genesis Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department will sponsor a seminar on the use of musical therapy in a health-care environment, hosting Suzanne Jonas, director of the Inner Harmony Health Center in Maryville, Tenn.
Working in both a general and rehabilitation hospital, Jonas says she has seen the effects that music can have on a person’s recovery.
“It greatly decreased pain for people and helped wean some people from respirators,” she said, adding that it can also be helpful to patients with insomnia, depression, and anxiety.
Those who attend the seminar will learn which type of music can be therapeutic for certain physical conditions.
“For someone who’s depressed, you’d use a whole different scope of music for them compared to someone who’s in pain,” said Pat Christy, the cancer program manager at Genesis.
Genesis currently has a variety of tapes in its oncology unit and has a Health Living TV channel that combines visual imagery and music on televisions in patient’s rooms.
The seminar will be held at the Adler Health Education Center at Genesis Medical Center from 7:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Saturday. Registration cost is $50. To register, call Anne Pauly at (563) 421-2282.
