Rock Island man sentenced on federal weapons charge

A 25-year-old Rock Island man has been sentenced to five years and three months in a federal penitentiary after pleading guilty to a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
Kenneth Russell was sentenced July 7 in U.S. District Court, Davenport, by Chief U.S. District Judge Robert Pratt.
Russell also was sentenced to two years of supervised release after his incarceration is completed.
According to court records, a Bettendorf police officer encountered Russell and two other people near a motel Oct. 8. As the officer approached the three people, Russell knelt down behind a vehicle and the officer heard metal scraping the pavement.
The officer located a .38-caliber handgun under the car, and a .25-caliber handgun also was seized from under the front passenger seat of the vehicle, court records state.
A small quantity of cocaine also was seized, according to court records.
Russell is prohibited from possessing firearms because of previous drug and firearm felony convictions. He pleaded guilty to the weapons charge Feb. 16.
